Over the past few years, My Big Fat Fabulous Life star, Whitney Way Thore has been sharing photos and videos of herself working up a sweat while doing various CrossFit-style workouts. Recently, she’s developed a passion for Olympic weightlifting and has been crushing exercises like 100-pound barbell clean and jerks like they’re NBD. This week, Thore attempted an Olympic weightlifting move known as a power snatch.
In an Instagram video, Thore is seen pulling off the first part of the move, which involves shooting the barbell up and above your head. But she’s unable to lock and complete the lift at the end, causing her to crash to the ground. “Walking into Tuesday like, ‘Yeees—oop!’ she jokingly captioned the post.
Even though it was an unsuccessful attempt, Thore didn’t seem fazed or discouraged by it whatsoever. Even better: Several of her followers applauded her for handling failure with such a positive attitude.
“I am proud of you!! You always keep pushing forward,” one user shared. “You make failed attempts look graceful,” added another person. “Progress comes with failure.”
Unfortunately, though, there were hundreds of commenters who felt that Thore shouldn’t be attempting Olympic weightlifting moves at all. Why? Because of her size, and the accompanying assumption that she would hurt herself.
“Your form is all off,” one user wrote. “You’re too big to [have] good form as you can’t clean and squat effectively.”
Some people even went as far as saying she was “making a fool of herself,” while others said she should stick to doing “lots and lots of cardio.”

Rather than responding to each hateful comment individually, Thore let her progress speak for itself: She shared another video of herself nailing the power snatch, shutting down her haters once and for all.
“After reading the comments on my last post, I just wanna say…Plenty of weight lifters are fat,” she wrote, adding that she’s working with Sean Michael Rigsby, “one of the best lifting coaches in the sport,” who makes sure she’s staying safe.
Thore also noted that the fall didn’t leave a mark on her, either physically or emotionally. “Failure is a part of training,” she wrote. “I don’t need to get ‘more fit’ before I pursue lifting. Lifting IS getting me fit. No one needs to be worried about my back/knees/pinkie toe. I’m the strongest I’ve been in the last 10 years. For all y’all who laughed with me, that was the point. Thank you.”
Sadly, this isn’t the first time Thore has been criticized for sharing her workouts on Instagram. Last year, she dealt with trolls asking her why she wasn’t losing weight despite spending a lot of time in the gym.
“Recently I’ve gotten a lot of comments and DMs with an accusatory nature, asking me questions like, ‘If you work out so much, why don’t you lose weight? What are you eating?’ and things like, ‘If you’re going to post workouts and not meals, that isn’t fair; we’re not getting the full picture,'” she shared in an April Instagram post.
In the same post, Thore opened up about struggling with disordered eating in the past. She also shared that she suffers from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a common endocrine disorder that can cause infertility and mess with your hormones—which can sometimes cause significant weight fluctuations, too, as Thore noted.
Concluding the April post, Thore said she’s simply doing the best she can in the workouts she shares on Instagram—and if that’s enough for her, it doesn’t matter what others think. “Where I am today is a woman who, just like you, is trying to be balanced, who is trying to be healthy (also mentally and emotionally), and who is just…doing her best,” she wrote. “That’s it.”
